Recently I installed the new Windows 7 Release Candidate on my box. I’m absolutely pleased about the speed and the stability of the system. One thing I like about Windows 7 is the new Library function. If you haven’t heard about this yet, read more about it for example on the Windows Team Blog.

Unfortunately there is one problem: you can only add locations to a library that are indexed by Windows Search. This won’t work for unix-based SMB shares (like the ones my NAS uses). If you try to add such a network share you will receive an error message similar to this one: “This network location can’t be included because it is not indexed.”

library error

After searching the internet I found an article by Mark Smith explaining how to overcome this pitfall with the use of a symbolic link.

If you want to add the network location to the library without using the command line you can do it by using Windows Media Player.

Start WMP, hit Ctrl+1 to change to the Library View. Now right-click the library you want to customize and choose Manage Music/Videos/Whatever Library. You will be presented with exactly the same interface you got using Windows Explorer – but this time you will be able to add any SMB share, no matter if it’s indexed or not.

Give it a try!
